About the event
NOTE: This event is CANCELLED due to not enough pre-registered tickets sold with one week to go. There was an internally decided threshold set and unfortunately we did not reach it this time around. Thank you to everyone who has shown interest in the event and we will hopefully see you all in 2024!
Ticket to Ride Europe Competition Rules - The Place Charlestown

Format:
- The tournament will run with a Group Stage to Knockout format. The number of groups and the format of the knockout rounds will be determined based on the number of entries sold
- Group Stage
- Each Group will play 3 games of Ticket to Ride amongst the same group
- Each Group will be filled with randomly allocated players
- For Fairness, the group draw will be entirely random. There is no guarantee friends and family will be drawn to play with each other.
- Each player will be assigned a player colour for the group. Red, Yellow, Green or Blue
- Turn order for the groups are as follows
- Match 1: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue
- Match 2: Yellow, Green, Blue, Red
- Match 3: Green, Blue, Red, Yellow
- Each group will be expected to accurately and fairly record their own scores on the sheet. Once all 3 matches are complete, the score sheet will be collected.
- Each player will awarded points based on their position in each match as follows
- 1st: 8 Points
- 2nd: 5 Points
- 3rd: 3 Points
- 4th: 1 Point
- Players will Qualify from the Group Stage to the Knockout Stage based on these points
- Knockout Stage
- Number of players qualifying from the Group Stage to the Knockout Stage will be determined based on the number of players entered for the tournament.
- Each Knockout Round will see 4 players compete in a single game of Ticket to Ride with the winner progressing to the next round (or top 2 players depending on determined knockout format)
- The Final 4 player will compete in the Grand Final match with players receiving prizes based on their result
Prizes:
- The following Prizes will be awarded to players in the Grand Final
- Winner: $300
- 2nd Place: $200
- 3rd Place: $100
- 4th Place: Your money back
- Random Draw Prize
- Every entered player will be entered into a random draw to win $100
Entry Requirements:
- Entry for the tournament will be $35 per player
- Age: Players aged 10 and above are eligible to enter the tournament
- Players under the age of 14 must have a guardian with them in attendance at the tournament.
Tournament Schedule:
09:00 - Tournament Sign in Opens. Players will be asked to provide ID which matches the name they registered under. Players will also be able to find their assigned group and table for the Group Stage.
09:30 - Tournament briefing and rules rundown
09:40- 12:40 - Group Stage. All Groups will have until 13:30 to complete their 3 matches. Groups who finish their matches early may use the time to play more friendly games or have a well earned Lunch Break. Food and Drink can be found in the food court and various restaurants at Charlestown Square.
Lucky Draw Prize will be drawn at the conclusion of the Group Stage in case any eliminated players wish to leave.
12:40 - 13:30 - Lunch Break (Groups who are still completing their Group Stage games may play through the Lunch Break)
13:30 - 14:30 - Knockout Round
14:30 - 16:30 - Semi Final
16:30 - 17:30- Grand Final
17:30 - Event Concludes
Unfinished Games - The times allocated should be enough to complete all the rounds. If however a game runs overtime a tournament official will assess the game state and make a call on how to proceed. If you are concerned a particular player is purposely slowing the game down or is persistently taking too long for their turn, please raise the flag provided and a tournament official will come and discuss this with the group.
Friendly Games - Players eliminated from the tournament are welcome to find other eliminated players to continue playing friendly games with. If players also want to bring along other board games to play once eliminated they may do so.
Rules
- Games will be played according to the rules provided in the game rulebook. No ‘house rules’ or variants are allowed
- Food and Drink can be brought into the event space and enjoyed whilst playing, however please take care of the games and be considerate of those around you.
- Rule Disagreements: If there is a disagreement or any confusion in a game about the application of the rules, try to politely resolve the disagreement amongst the group in the first instance. If unable to resolve the disagreement or confusion, raise the flag that will be provided to your group and wait for a tournament official to come and discuss the disagreement. Any ruling made by the tournament official about how to proceed with your game is FINAL
- Shuffling Decks: Not everyone shuffles decks of cards the same. If it looks like another player is making a genuine effort to shuffle a deck, please do not harass them for it. Just play on. If any concerns arise about a deck being shuffled fairly, please raise the flag provided and a tournament official will shuffle the deck for you.
- Disqualification: Any player may be disqualified during the tournament for any of the following conduct.
- Cheating
- Antisocial/Unsportsmanlike behavior - This will be at the discretion of the tournament host. But examples include:
- Verbally or Physically abusing another player for any reason
- Persistently trying to ‘shuffle’ a deck to favor them
- Complaining or becoming antisocial for another player “taking a route they need” or “taking a card they need”
- Being Unsportsmanlike due to the result of a game
- Any other act considered anti/social or unsportsmanlike
- Slowing the game down
Disqualified players will not receive a refund for their entry or be eligible to win any prizes and in some circumstances may be asked to leave the venue
- BE KIND
- While there are Cash prizes on offer, at the end of the day the primary purpose of this tournament is to provide a fun day for all the players. Players are encouraged to get to know their group members while playing, supporting and congratulating each other and generally being good sports.
Refund Policy
- Players who cancel their entry prior to exactly 3 weeks before the event start time are eligible for a 100% refund
- Players who cancel their entry between prior to exactly 2 weeks before the event start time are eligible for a 50% Refund
- Players who cancel their entry after exactly 2 weeks before the event start time are not eligible to receive a refund.
Event Cancellation
- If for whatever reason the event is canceled, all registered players will receive a 100% refund. This includes cancellations made less than 2 weeks prior to the start time of the event.
