WSBG Australian Qualifier

WSBG Australian Qualifier Format Summary 

• The Australian Qualifier for the World Series of Board Gaming will take place over a Single Day
• Players will compete in one game each of 5 different games
• Players will points based on their results in each of the 5 games
• The Top 16 players ranked by criteria to be determined will qualify for the Semi Finals
• The Final 4 players will compete in the Grand Final Match
• The Winner will receive free entry to the World Series of Board Gaming 2024 in Las Vegas

 Format Morning Session 

• Players will play 3 shorter games of about an hour or less each.

 Afternoon Session 

• Players will play 2 longer games of about 90-120 mins each.

 Evening Session 

• The Top 16 Ranked players will compete in the Semi Finals, consisting of 4 Tables of 4.                                                  
  • The game which will be played in the Semi Finals will be randomly drawn

      

• The Winner of each Semi Final will qualify for the Grand Final                                                  
  • The game to be played in the Grand Final will be randomly drawn.     

      

Tickets

Price: $80AUD per entry. This is to cover costs of supplying multiple copies of the 5 different board games, and the main prize.

Each Entrant will receive a $50USD discount to Stay and Play Packages for the 2024 WSBG event in Las Vegas in September.

 Games 

There will be 3 short and 2 longer games. With each player playing every game once each.  

Short Games: Ticket to Ride, Azul, Cascadia

Long Games: Wingspan, Ark Nova

• 10:30 - Short Game 2
• 11:30 - Short Game 3
• 12:30 - Lunch
• 1:30 - Long Game 1
• 3:30 - Long Game 2

• 6:30 - Semi Finals
• 7:30 - Grand Final

 Semi-Final Game Selection 

• Each Table will randomly draw one of the 3 shorter games to be played as their Semi-Final game.

 Grand Final Game Selection 

• The Grand Final game will be randomly selected from all 5 games

 Prizes Winner 

• The winner of the grand final will win:                                                  
  • 4 Ring Tournament Pass to WSBG Las Vegas (Value $475 USD)
  • Additional prize of $30 x Number of Entries. This is to assist with covering cost of flights and accommodation to Las Vegas. Capped at $3000AUD. This will be paid out AFTER proof of attendance to WSBG Las Vegas.

      

 2nd Place 

• The second place in the grand final will win:                                                  
  • 1 Ring Tournament Pass to WSBG (Value $275 USD. Can be upgraded at own cost)  

      

 3rd Place 

• The third place in the grand final will win:                                                  
  • 1 Ring Tournament Pass to WSBG (Value $275 USD. Can be upgraded at own cost.

      

 Registration/Eligibility 

• Tournament Entry is open to players of all ages. Players under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian per Club entry requirements.
• Only players aged 18 and over are eligible to win the prizes. WSBG Las Vegas requires players to be 18 years and older to compete.
• If players under 18 years place 1st, 2nd or 3rd the respective prizes will be awarded to the next highest ranked player aged 18 and older.

FAQ

I have no intention of going to Las Vegas, can I still compete in the tournament?

Yes, absolutely! The Prize Winners will be given a deadline by which they will need to confirm their acceptance/usage of the prizes. Unused prizes will then be offered to the next highest ranked participant.

Can I or my friends/family spectate without participating?

Yes, of course! Spectators may enter the event for $10. Table space will be prioritised to the games themselves, so depending on capacity and registration numbers specators may not have a dedicated table to use themselves.

Do I need to be an 'expert' at the selected board games to participate?

Not at all! Whether you have played each game hundreds of times or never before, everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate! Fun fact - The overall winner of the WSBG 2023 event in Las Vegas won the final (and $25,000USD) in a 20 minute game of Splendor. She had NEVER played Splendor before. Everyone has a chance to win!

What is the World Series of Board Gaming?

The WSBG is an annual event in Las Vegas, this year being their 3rd year running, in which players from all over the world may enter a 4 Day Event in which players can compete across 16 different games. The winner of the tournament for each game wins a ring (think like a Super Bowl Ring) and progresses to the WSBG finals, where players have a chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes! Along with the official tournaments, there are also many side tournaments for other games, an open gaming library as well as vendors and exhibitors. It is basically a mini game convention centered around tournaments with big prizes!
